If you’ve ever stubbed your big toe (which contains two bones called “phalanges”), you know that having healthy feet and ankles is an important part of your overall well being.
Podiatry is the medical specialty that focuses on the health of the foot and ankle. A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of foot disorders, diseases and injuries.
Podiatrists are fully trained medical doctors. They see patients, order tests, perform surgery, and prescribe medications and other treatments to help patients regain mobility, reduce pain and prevent further injury.
Did you know foot problems can be a symptom of a serious medical condition?
Podiatrists are often the first detect serious health problems in their patients, including diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and kidney disease. People with diabetes, for example, often report numbness in their feet, while arthritis can cause severe foot pain.
