Description

The South Carolina AHEC Summer Careers Academy is presented by the South Carolina AHEC in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Colleges of Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Nursing, Medicine, and Pharmacy. The Academy is a one-week summer program designed to help economically underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students prepare for entry into dental, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, and occupational therapy training programs within South Carolina. It has been developed as an opportunity to increase the retention and graduation rates of economically underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students by increasing the participant’s knowledge in the areas of:
• Disciplines of dental medicine, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy and physician assistant
• Admission requirements of South Carolina dental medicine, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy and physician assistant programs
• Financial assistance resources
• Academic success skills
• Professional techniques
• Educational/professional opportunities
Academy Fellows will take part in a week of clinical and didactic sessions on the campus of MUSC, in Charleston, SC, from June 4-9, 2017. Classroom lectures and project topics will focus on several health disparities prevalent among South Carolinians. Housing and meals will be provided. Fellows will receive a stipend of $200 upon the successful completion of the Academy.

Eligibility

  • Be a South Carolina resident or enrolled in a South Carolina school, college or university
  • Be 18 years old on or before June 2, 2017 NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in a field of dental medicine, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy or physician assistant
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Be currently enrolled in, or accepted for enrollment by an accredited college or university for the fall of 2016 with an interest in pursuing a career in a designated Academy career path
  • Applicants to the medicine, nursing, occupational therapy or physician assistant tracks must have completed graduation/GED requirements prior to June 2, 2017
  • Dental and Pharmacy Career Academy applicants must have graduated from high school by December 2016 and earned a minimum of 12 hours of academic credit from an accredited college or university
