Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Little Rock, AR.
Type Basic Science Research

Description

he UAMS Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology sponsors the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program to introduce qualified, highly-motivated undergraduates to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors. SURF students work with researchers in a broad range of areas including biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry; molecular, cell and reproductive biology; toxicology; aging; nutrition; and neuroscience. Students obtain hands on experience in an engaging research environment. SURF serves as an interactive model of our graduate program: Students carry out a research project under the direction of a mentor. Students attend seminars to learn about on-going research programs within our department and role of graduate education in those studies. Social events are available for summer students to interact with graduate students in an informal setting. Students carry out the work over a 10-week period in the summer, early-June to early August. At the conclusion of the program, students submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation at the SURF Symposium, which is modeled on a professional technical meeting.

Eligibility

To be eligible for SURF, you must: Be a continuing undergraduate student at a domestic university. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.0. Complete the second semester or third quarter in residence at your college or university. Not be under any disciplinary sanction.
