VCU Acceleration is a comprehensive program for incoming VCU freshmen who are interested in pre-health concentrations in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and other health sciences. The program provides exposure to various health professions, preparatory course work in math and science and academic support throughout the freshman year.
VCU Acceleration is a great fit for students whose previous K-12 educational environment may have limited their ability to acquire the math and science skills necessary to pursue a career in the health sciences.
Students who participate in the program begin during the summer session prior to their first year at VCU. While living on the MCV Campus, students spend four weeks completing non-credit undergraduate academic course work, professional skills development, cultural competency workshops, and realistic goal setting. They gain exposure to various specialties in the health professions as well.
The summer program is designed to help students prepare for pre-health sciences core course work, as well as chemistry and math placement tests. Each student receives a stipend while participating.
Any recent high school graduate who is interested in VCU pre-health sciences can apply. Students must be accepted for admission at VCU for the fall semester in order to participate.
Applicants should have a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 from their secondary education institution, average math and verbal SAT of 1000 and past participation in extracurricular or volunteer activities. They also must agree to reside in on-campus housing during the freshman year and participate in the summer session. Applications, letters of recommendation and a copy of an official high school transcript must be provided at the time of application.
