The purpose of the Bachelor of Science Nursing Loan Repayment Program (BSNLRP) is to increase the number of Registered Nurses (RN) practicing in medically underserved areas of California. This is done by authorizing a plan for repayment of educational loans incurred while attending a baccalaureate degree nursing program. If awarded, the applicant agrees to provide direct patient care on a full time basis (40 hours per week or its equivalent) in a designated shortage area for a minimum of two (2) years. Applications for the Bachelor of Science Nursing Loan Repayment Program are accepted annually and repay up to $19,000 in educational debt. The BSNLRP is administered by the Health Professions Education Foundation (Foundation) and is funded by a $10.00 surcharge on each Registered Nurse licensure renewal. All awards are subject to the availability of funding.
To be eligible for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Loan Repayment, the applicant must: • be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse, and • be practicing in an Medically Underserved Area (MUA), Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), or any County, State, prison or Veteran’s facility (to find out if your facility qualifies please visit the Foundation’s website for complete instructions at http://www.oshpd. ca.gov/HPEF/MUAs.html.), and • have outstanding educational debt from a commercial or U.S. government lending institution, and • NOT owe an existing service obligation, and • have valid legal presence and ability to work and provide care in the state of California
