The purpose of the program is to recruit and retain qualified physicians to provide primary health care in areas of Texas that are medically under-served. The maximum annual state funded loan repayment for an eligible physician providing full-time service is $9,000. Repayments are contingent on availability of funds.
Eligibility requirements: (1) Have a current unrestricted license with no disciplinary action from the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, (2) Work at an approved practice site, (3) Earned board certification within the last six years in one of the approved specialties or (except for general practitioners) have satisfactorily completed an approved postgraduate program, (4) Accept Medicaid assignments as full payment for services, and never deny services based on a patient’s ability to pay, (5) Practice an approved specialty.
Approved areas of practice: Family Practice, Osteopathic Family Practice, Obstetrics/Gynecology, General Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and Psychiatry.
The physician must provide eligible services for at least 12 consecutive months at an approved practice site. The year of service begins on July 1, and ends on June 30 of the next year.
