The purpose of the David Mersy, M.D., Student Externship Program is to stimulate interest
among Minnesota’s medical students to select and pursue a career in Family Medicine. To
be considered, candidates must apply to the program by writing a proposal for a project they
develop, implement, and analyze. Project results and findings are shared with family physicians
by way of a presentation or poster session. Projects must relevant to the specialty of Family
Medicine, and can be research or non-research oriented. Award announcements are made in
April and projects must be completed by March the following year.
Eligible candidates must be a member of the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (free for
Minnesota’s medical students:
Medical students selected to the program:
1. Learn more about the specialty of Family Medicine.
2. Build a professional relationship with a family physician mentor; and
3. Develop project management, writing, presentation, and leadership skills.
