The Primary Care Resource Initiative for Missouri (PRIMO) is a multi-faceted approach to the health care delivery services for all Missourians.

The four components of PRIMO are:

• Student Loans
• Recruitment/Placement
• Health Professional Loan Repayment
• Health Care Delivery Systems

This component of PRIMO was designed as coordinated incentives to increase the number of primary medical, dental, behavioral, and nutritional health care professionals and health care delivery systems in areas of need within the state. These services are the actual hands-on primary and preventive health care provided in a clinical outpatient setting.

The PRIMO Student Loan Program is a competitive State program that awards forgivable loans to students pursuing health care training leading to Missouri licensure or registration in one of the following fields:

  • Primary Care Physician
  • Dentist
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Psychiatrist
  • Psychologist
  • Licensed  Clinical Social Worker
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Licensed/Registered Dietitian

To earn forgiveness upon obtaining licensure, participants are required to work in a rural or underserved area.  An underserved area of need is a geographic area or a population that is experiencing a shortage of primary health care providers or has an inability to access primary health care providers. This includes those areas designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
