Psychiatric Aides assist mentally impaired or emotionally disturbed patients under the direction of nursing and medical staff. They monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being, assist with daily living activities, accompany patients to and from therapy sessions and other activities, and help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment in psychiatric settings.
Working conditions
These aides work in psychiatric hospitals, residential mental health treatment facilities, and psychiatric units where they provide direct patient care and supervision. Work involves potentially challenging patient behaviors, maintaining patient safety and security, physical demands of patient assistance and crisis intervention, and shift work including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent with on-the-job training in psychiatric patient care and safety procedures. Some employers may require completion of a postsecondary certificate program in psychiatric or mental health technology. State regulations may require specific training or certification.
