Hospitalist
Physicians & Surgeons
Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the comprehensive medical care of hospitalized patients. They manage acute medical conditions, coordinate care with specialists and healthcare teams, facilitate transitions of care, and focus exclusively on inpatient medicine without maintaining an outpatient practice, improving efficiency and continuity of hospital-based care.
Working conditions
These physicians work exclusively in hospital settings where they manage patients admitted to medical wards, providing around-the-clock coverage through shift work. Work involves hospital rounds, consultations with specialists, coordinating discharge planning, and direct patient care in inpatient units, typically working 7-day stretches followed by days off rather than traditional office hours.
Academic requirements
This occupation requires a medical degree (MD or DO) followed by completion of a 3-year internal medicine or family medicine residency. State medical licensure and board certification in internal medicine or family medicine are required. Additional certification in hospital medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine is available.
