Obstetricians and Gynecologists provide medical care related to pregnancy and childbirth, and diagnose and treat diseases of the female reproductive system. They perform prenatal care and deliveries, gynecological examinations and surgeries, manage reproductive health issues, and provide preventive care including cancer screenings and family planning services.
Working conditions
These physicians work in hospitals, women's health clinics, and private obstetric/gynecologic practices where they provide both office-based care and perform deliveries or surgeries. Work involves examination rooms, labor and delivery units, and operating rooms, with irregular hours including on-call availability for deliveries and obstetric emergencies at any time of day or night.
Academic requirements
This occupation requires a medical degree (MD or DO) followed by completion of a 4-year obstetrics and gynecology residency program. State medical licensure and board certification in obstetrics and gynecology through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology are required. Some pursue subspecialty fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine or gynecologic oncology.
