They treat fractures, joint replacements, sports injuries, degenerative conditions, and bone tumors through surgical and non-surgical interventions, often subspecializing in areas such as spine, hand, or sports medicine.
Working conditions
These surgeons work in hospitals, surgical centers, and orthopedic clinics where they provide consultations and perform surgical procedures. Work involves outpatient clinics for patient evaluations, operating rooms for surgical interventions, and sometimes participation in hospital trauma calls, with demanding schedules including on-call responsibilities for orthopedic emergencies and trauma.
Academic requirements
This occupation requires a medical degree (MD or DO) followed by completion of a 5-year orthopedic surgery residency program. State medical licensure and board certification in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery are required. Many complete additional fellowship training in subspecialties.
