Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians diagnose and treat patients with physical disabilities or impairments affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. They develop comprehensive rehabilitation programs to restore function and improve quality of life, managing conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and chronic pain.
Working conditions
These physicians work in rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and private practices where they evaluate patients and develop rehabilitation treatment plans. Work involves clinical consultations, coordination with physical therapists and occupational therapists, and sometimes performing procedures such as joint injections, typically maintaining regular office hours with occasional inpatient consultations.
Academic requirements
This occupation requires a medical degree (MD or DO) followed by completion of a 4-year physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program. State medical licensure and board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation through the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation are required.
