Cytogenetic Technologists
Technologists & Technicians
Cytogenetic Technologists analyze chromosomes found in biological specimens such as blood, bone marrow, and amniotic fluid to detect genetic abnormalities and diseases. They prepare cell cultures, harvest chromosomes, perform specialized staining techniques, and use microscopy and molecular techniques to identify chromosomal abnormalities associated with genetic disorders, cancer, and prenatal conditions.
Working conditions
These technologists work in hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, genetic testing facilities, and research institutions where they perform specialized chromosomal analysis. Work involves laboratory settings with cell culture facilities, microscopes, and molecular diagnostic equipment, typically maintaining regular daytime hours though some facilities may require shift work.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires a bachelor's degree in biology, medical technology, or a related field with specialized training in cytogenetics. Certification as a Cytogenetic Technologist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is strongly preferred by most employers, requiring education and examination requirements.
