Working conditions
These technicians work in hospital endoscopy departments, ambulatory surgery centers, and gastroenterology clinics where endoscopic procedures are performed. Work involves procedure rooms with endoscopic equipment, direct patient contact during procedures, exposure to bodily fluids and infectious materials, and adherence to strict infection control and sterilization protocols, typically during regular daytime hours.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent with specialized training in endoscope reprocessing and endoscopy procedures. Certification in endoscope reprocessing through organizations such as the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or as a Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) is increasingly required or preferred by employers.
