Working conditions
These technicians work in hospital pathology departments, reference laboratories, and research facilities where they prepare histological specimens. Work involves laboratory bench work with tissue processing equipment and microtomes, following established protocols and safety procedures for handling biological materials and chemical reagents, typically during regular business hours.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires completion of a histology technician training program, which may be a certificate program or associate degree with specialized histology coursework. Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred by many employers.
