Histotechnologists
Technologists & Technicians
Histotechnologists prepare and examine tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists to diagnose diseases. They process tissue specimens through embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting procedures, perform specialized staining techniques to highlight cellular structures, and ensure high-quality tissue preparations for accurate pathological diagnosis.
Working conditions
These technologists work in hospital pathology laboratories, reference laboratories, research facilities, and physician office laboratories where they prepare histological specimens. Work involves laboratory settings with tissue processing equipment, microtomes, and staining equipment, following safety protocols for handling biological specimens and chemicals, typically during regular daytime hours.
Academic requirements
This occupation requires a bachelor's degree with coursework in biology, chemistry, and related sciences, plus completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred by employers, requiring education requirements and passing a certification examination.
