Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists
Technologists & Technicians
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists operate MRI scanners to create diagnostic images of patients' internal organs, tissues, and skeletal structures. They position patients, select appropriate imaging protocols, monitor patients during scans for safety and comfort, and ensure image quality for radiologist interpretation, following safety procedures for the powerful magnetic fields used in MRI.
Working conditions
These technologists work in hospitals, imaging centers, and outpatient diagnostic facilities where they operate MRI equipment. Work involves MRI suites with strong magnetic fields requiring strict safety protocols, patient interaction and positioning, and collaboration with radiologists. Schedules may include evenings, weekends, or on-call hours to provide imaging services.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires an associate degree in radiologic technology or MRI technology from an accredited program. Certification in MRI through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required by most employers and some states. Prior experience as a radiologic technologist is common.
