Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technicians perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. They prepare specimens, operate automated analyzers and other laboratory equipment, perform manual testing procedures, and record test results, working under the supervision of laboratory technologists or laboratory managers.
Working conditions
These technicians work in hospital laboratories, diagnostic laboratories, physician offices, and public health facilities where they conduct laboratory testing. Work involves laboratory settings with various testing equipment and instrumentation, following safety protocols for handling biological specimens, and typically working regular hours though some positions may require evening, night, or weekend shifts.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires an associate degree in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited program. Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) is required by many employers and some states for licensure.
