Ophthalmic Medical Technologists perform specialized tests and procedures to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye diseases and disorders. They conduct advanced ophthalmic diagnostic testing including visual field testing, ocular imaging, and measurements for surgical planning, assist with minor surgical procedures, and maintain ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
Working conditions
These technologists work in ophthalmology practices, eye clinics, and hospital ophthalmology departments where they assist with patient examinations and testing. Work involves examination rooms and procedure areas equipped with specialized ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, direct patient contact for testing and procedures, and collaboration with ophthalmologists and optometrists.
Academic requirements
This occupation typically requires completion of an ophthalmic medical technology training program and prior experience as an ophthalmic technician or assistant. Certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) is preferred by employers.
