This program is offered to individuals currently attending a program of study designed to prepare the individual for service as a midlevel practitioner. These professions include nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, advanced clinical nurse specialists, and physician assistants. Individuals must plan to practice in a designated rural area in Minnesota after completion of their midlevel practitioner educational program. To be eligible, a prospective participant must submit an application to the Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (ORHPC) while attending a midlevel practitioner educational program. Program participants must serve at least three years following completion of residency in a designated rural area.
Selected participants are eligible for up to four years of loan forgiveness. For each year that a participant serves as a midlevel practitioner in a designated rural area for a minimum of 30 hours per week, the ORHPC will pay directly to the participant an annual lump (approximately $6,000). The participant must complete a minimum of three years of service in a designated rural area that shall begin no later than March following completion of their midlevel practitioner educational program. The ORHPC will annually require the participant verify he or she is serving as a midlevel practitioner in a designated rural area in Minnesota.
Applications due in early December. Prospective participants must apply while attending eligible program.
